I REALLY REALLY like this girl that also really likes me. But other people think that we will just “die out” in a matter of years. In some ways Im afraid. Im 16 and shes 14 and shes the best girl that Ive ever come across. I dont want to lose her. But people say that its just puppy love and people change as they get older. She may not keep her hair like that, but this is the first time she straightened it in the 8 months we have been talking. She wears my favorite color and buys me things in my favorite color. She wears the perfume I like and the lip gloss I like on her.
3.She treasures everything I give her- She still has probably every poem I gave her. But every gift I got her she keeps it safe in her warm bedroom close to her.
4.She would glance at me or pretend like Im not there but I know she wants to look- When I walk into a room that shes in she doesnt give the casual glance most regular people do to others, she stares at me for a good while keeping her eyes locked on me and then proceeds to doing what she was previously doing.
5.She talks like a confident women who is open minded, speaks for her self and shows alot of emotion too. However, she is only like that in text or on facebook. In person, she is real quiet and is no where near as talkative. She, in person, is just like as if we never liked eachother but she had a crush on me that no one knew about.
6. she remembers everything I say and takes it into consideration.
7. She encourages me to do the things I want to do, gives me advice, and is there for me to support me emotionally.
8. She loves talking to me even though I have to start all the conversations.
9. One time we had a fight and she got so upset that I ignored her for 3 days so she couldnt eat or sleep properly. She was so emotionally distraught that she basically punished me but she did it in means of protecting her heart. She wouldnt let me kiss her and we talked far less. However just one month later, her feelings came back for me and its as if that period of time never happened and we had the first kiss we had in months on sunday. A typical German family, not Jewish. Literally just a typical German family, average citizens. That’s the perspective I want.
Originally they are fine. They aren’t complete fascists, but they show no sign of being anything radical. The children are part of Hitler Youth (pretty much compulsory then), the father is a member of the ‘Party’ (also necessary if you wanted work in Germany). But they just get by. At this point the novel focuses on the effect of The Enemy (France, England etc) on Germany. And the gradual shift from pre-war to war and the effct on the average citizen’s lives (rationing, that kind of thing) with subtle hints to the shift in the Jews’ treatment as well. Although the characters aren’t concerned with this. I want them to be really relatable, typical family, quite ‘nice’ people generally. I want to illustrate how the German public were really, on the whole, no different from us when many people assume that the enirity of Germany was fascist horrible Nazis.
However, lets say a third of the way through the book, the father goes to fight in the war (pilot). He’s a pilot because I want the slight hint of him dropping bombs on families the same as his at home, only speaking a different language. He’s not evil though, obviously, he’s just doing his job.
At home in Germany, things are getting more chaotic. Bombs are being dropped on Hamburg (the homeplace of these citizens) and they’ll be a few teary deaths of people the family are close to. At this point, the family are untouched though.
Then the eldest son (18) is called up to fight. This is obviously shaking them up a bit.
And the remaining family members (Mother and two daughters, teenager and a baby) end up hiding a Jewish old friend of the mother’s in the attic. I won’t go into the highs and lows of the relationship, but lets say they were lovers years before she met the father of her children.
This complicates things, as the family never realised they were radical. But gradually I suppose, throughout the book, they are becoming aware of where they stand within Germany’s motives. These people are not evil, but nor are innocent. They are humans, like the rest of us. They have pasts, presents and futures. They are finding their way in a country torn apart by war.
So that’s the story; father a pilot, unaware of his own actions; son away fighting; mothers and daughters hiding a Jewish man in the attic.
I am going to round it off with a sad ending (because that’s my speciality haha) but not like overly sad and terrible, just sad in the sense that the reader knows that these people are just human and really no different from themselves, and that the general public of Nazi Germany were human too.
The basic concept of the book will be an exploration into the evil and good of humanity and the way we percieve ourselves and those around us.
I know there;s been a lot written in WWII, but I’ve never read anything from the prespective of a normal German family.
